I’ve Never Shared This Before…

I never shared this before, but in highschool I had one of the most humiliating experiences of my life. An anonymous singing telegram read overhead in the school cafeteria addressed to me, a new student in a new state, not only allowed others to laugh at my expense, but solidified my belief that I wasn’t good enough.

“Roses are red, violets are blue, God made me handsome, what happened to you?”

That awful poem played on repeat in my head for decades.

You know that feeling when the opinions of others can be so loud that your inner voice is simply a whisper?

Maybe you’ve heard from a parent, friends, classmates, even your doctors how they see you and even though you know deep inside they are wrong, you begin to believe their words over yours.

On my 40th birthday, the gift I gave myself was the mute button. I decided to silence the voice of everyone else, and finally listen to my own. When I did that, I got strong enough to stand up for what I knew I needed…especially with my health.

Here’s the thing - I believe that every woman has the superpower of intuition when it comes to health. We already know what is right for our bodies. We already know what is important to us in our health, societal ideas aside. And that’s exactly the belief that I’ve built my entire health coaching business on.

What if you could drown out the voices telling you to chase fad diets? What if you could advocate for yourself to your doctor when he tells you nothing is wrong, but you know that it is? What if you could exercise in ways that feel good for your body, instead of punishing it for not looking the way that you think it should?

It’s hard not to be swayed by the voices of others - I should know because that awful Valentine poem lived rent free in my brain for years. But I’m here now, on the other side - reminding you that you can turn down the noise and turn up the volume for the only voice that truly matters - your own.

If you’re ready to do the same, or you need someone to be your noise canceling headphones until you find your own, follow along @msvictoriabyrd for more tips and encouragement.
